Lorna has always believed that confidence and kindness are two of the most beautiful things a person can wear. My journey into the world of image and etiquette began unexpectedly when, as a teenager in Jamaica, I was introduced to a series of newspaper articles on "Modern Etiquette" by a friend from Girl Guides. I didn’t just read those articles — I devoured them, carefully clipping and scrapbooking every piece I could find. From then on, etiquette wasn’t just a curiosity; it became part of me.
When my family and I migrated to Canada in 1993, I carried my love for etiquette with me — but soon realized there was more to making a positive impression than good manners alone. I faced cultural challenges, climate shock, and the discomfort of feeling out of place. I’ll never forget one winter afternoon when, trying to stay warm with unfamiliar winter wear, I became the target of laughter from strangers. I was crushed. That moment taught me a lasting lesson: etiquette and image go hand-in-hand. Kindness alone wasn’t enough; I needed to understand how to visually present myself with confidence.
Years later, at an Avon banquet, I noticed a colleague who seemed to radiate elegance and self-assurance. It wasn’t just the dress she wore — it was her presence. I quietly wondered, How can I learn that? That spark stayed with me, and while life took me through seasons of raising children and navigating new responsibilities, I never lost the desire to master the art of image and etiquette.
One ordinary day, in what I now call divine timing, I felt prompted to check Instagram. There, I stumbled upon an adult dining etiquette class. Without hesitation, I signed up. Those two hours changed my life. At the end of the session, I boldly shared my dream with the instructor: “I would love to teach etiquette.” She looked at me and said, “You can. And you should.” That one affirmation ignited the courage to step into my calling.
I pursued formal training, earning my credentials in etiquette and image consulting. Along the way, I realized that what I once saw as two separate worlds — how we behave and how we present ourselves — are inseparable. When combined, they create presence, confidence, and connection. Today, I have the privilege of teaching clients not only how to present themselves beautifully but how to live with poise and purpose.
My work is more than teaching table manners or choosing the right outfit — it’s about transformation. I specialize in guiding clients through life’s pivotal moments, from brides and grooms preparing for their wedding day, to young professionals entering the workforce, to immigrants adjusting to a new culture. Whether facilitating workshops for youth through the Durham Region Association of Black Professionals and Entrepreneurs (DRAPE), supporting newcomers at the Pickering Welcome Centre, or helping a bride feel radiant at the head table, I’ve seen firsthand how etiquette and image open doors and elevate confidence.
Nothing brings me greater joy than watching clients unlock their potential. I still remember a young man, just 14, who arrived at my etiquette class slouched, guarded, and skeptical. By the end of the session, he was sitting tall and asking, “Madame, may I wear a suit tomorrow?” Moments like that remind me why I do this work.
As a wife of 40 years, mother to three adult sons, and grandmother of five, I know the importance of instilling timeless values. I am passionate about equipping the next generation — and the next client — with the tools to succeed, not just in appearance, but in life.
